Speech at Council Meeting-Q2 Capacity Building Mileage Programme

(Q2) : Capacity Building Mileage Programme

MR CHAN CHUN-YING:

Thank you, President.  Regarding the five domains set out in the Annex, the increase in the number of enrolment in Applied Science and Technology has been the highest in the past two years, having increased from 600-odd to 1 300-odd, which is almost doubled.

I would like to ask the authorities whether they will focus the resources on the most popular courses when conducting the review, so as to benefit more women?  Thank you.

SECRETARY FOR HOME AND YOUTH AFFAIRS :

I thank Mr CHAN Chun-ying for his suggestion.  In fact, this is exactly what we are thinking.  Our thinking is that we need to review the existing resources to see if they are indeed allocated to where they are required, and whether they can really achieve the goal of upgrading the skills of women.  In doing so, as Mr CHAN has mentioned just now, in recent years, we are highly concerned about the application of science, or AI and online platforms as we call them nowadays.  As a result, the number of participants enrolling in courses on this aspect are particularly high in recent years.

Nevertheless, what we intend to do now is, we are not going to focus on providing a certain type of courses when consolidating the resources.  Instead, we are going to provide resources to some organizations, so that they can provide courses very flexibly.  For example, we are concerned about technology these days, and if there is another new trend next year, these organizations can flexibly and quickly deploy their resources to offer some courses or training to meet the needs of women.  Therefore, our ideas, the direction of the review and the way in which resources are used are also consistent with what Mr CHAN has proposed.  Thank you, President.
